An EIA Notification is a regulatory framework established to assess the environmental impacts of certain projects before they are initiated. In India, the most notable notification is the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) Notification, 2006, and its subsequent amendments under the umbrella of the Environment (Protection) Act, 1986 issued by the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC).

The EIA Notification mandates prior environmental clearance (EC) from the appropriate regulatory authority for certain types of projects or activities based on their size, type, and environmental sensitivity. The notification's primary goal is to ensure that potential environmental impacts are evaluated, and mitigation measures are implemented before project initiation.

ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) compliance integration of environmental, social, and governance considerations into business practices to ensure that companies operate responsibly, ethically, and sustainably. ESG compliance is increasingly important as stakeholders—including investors, regulators, and consumers—are placing more emphasis on companies' non-financial performance and long-term sustainability as per  Governments and regulators around the world are introducing mandatory ESG disclosures and reporting standards. For example, the European Union’s Sustainable Finance Disclosure Regulation (SFDR) and Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) mandate companies to report on ESG performance SEBI compliance. Environmental regulations comprise of : 

  • Carbon emissions and climate change mitigation.
  • Resource consumption and efficiency (water, energy).
  • Waste management and pollution control.
  • Biodiversity and habitat protection.
  • Environmental management systems and sustainability reporting.

BRSR (Business Responsibility and Sustainability Reporting) compliance is a framework introduced by the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) to promote sustainable and responsible business practices among listed companies. It aims to align Indian businesses with globally recognized environmental, social, and governance (ESG) standards, encouraging transparency, accountability, and long-term value creation.

Overview of BRSR Compliance:

BRSR replaces the previous Business Responsibility Report (BRR) and provides a more detailed and comprehensive structure for disclosing non-financial information. It is based on the nine principles of the National Guidelines on Responsible Business Conduct (NGRBC) issued by the Ministry of Corporate Affairs (MCA).

BRSR is mandatory for the top 1,000 listed companies by market capitalization starting from FY 2022-23, while others are encouraged to adopt it voluntarily.

BRSR compliance represents a significant step forward in standardizing ESG disclosures among Indian companies. By focusing on responsible business conduct and sustainable development, companies not only meet regulatory obligations but also strengthen their resilience and appeal to a broader range of stakeholders.
